Saigyō, the warrior who became a wandering Buddhist monk and poet, is the figure this woodcut honors. He lived from 1118 to 1190, and his waka poems about cherry blossoms, the moon, and solitary travel made him one of the most admired poets in Japanese literary tradition. Edo-period artists returned to his life again and again, portraying him as the ideal of a monk who had renounced the world. The record credits the color woodcut to the engraver Matsushima Seikichi and dates it to 1750, so it reflects how a figure from the twelfth century was pictured in eighteenth-century Japan.
