Here the subject is Saigyō (1118–1190), a warrior who became a Buddhist monk and one of Japan's most admired waka poets, shown in a color woodcut dated 1750. The print falls within the Edo period, when color woodblock printing flourished and images of famous poets and religious figures circulated widely. Matsushima Seikichi is credited as the engraver, a reminder that these prints depended on skilled carvers as well as designers. Saigyō's legend of renunciation and wandering made him a favorite subject for later artists, and his poems on nature and impermanence still shape how Japanese readers view the figure.
