Titled simply "Igirisu," the Japanese word for England, this 1861 color woodcut shows English people on horseback, a sight that would have looked strange to many Japanese viewers of the time. The print was signed by the artist Utagawa Yoshitora and carries text by the writer Kanagaki Robun, who was known for lively popular fiction. Foreigners had only recently been allowed to live in the treaty ports after Japan reopened to Western trade in 1859, and prints like this one, with their mix of curiosity and commentary, helped Japanese readers picture the newcomers and their customs.
