Built on Capitol Hill just east of the Capitol, the Library of Congress was new when this view was made around 1898, a year after its main building opened to readers. The library had shared the Capitol with lawmakers for nearly a century, and an 1851 fire destroyed much of its collection, so a separate building became a priority. Designed by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz, the ornate building was meant to show the nation's ambitions for learning. The bracketed title suggests the catalogers supplied the name, since the record gives no photographer.
