This photograph shows the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., at the close of the 1890s, when its main building was new. The structure, now called the Thomas Jefferson Building, opened to the public in 1897 after years of construction, and it was built to ease crowding in the Capitol, where the national library had long been housed. Its ornate Beaux-Arts facade and interior decoration were meant to showcase the country's growing ambitions as a cultural power. The record does not name the photographer, so the print is best read as an early record of the building as it first presented itself to the public.
