Shortly after the Library of Congress's main building opened to readers in 1897, a photographer recorded it in the late 1890s, when it was still new. Its Beaux-Arts facade and domed reading room were designed to showcase the nation's growing collections, and the library was already counted among the largest in the world. The title appears in brackets, which signals that the cataloguers supplied it rather than taking it from the print itself, so the c1898 date is the best guide to when the view was made.
