This photograph shows the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., around 1898, just after its main building opened to the public in late 1897. Known today as the Thomas Jefferson Building, it was the library's first home separate from the U.S. Capitol, where its collection had been kept since 1800 and where most of the holdings were lost in the British burning of 1814. The bracketed title indicates that the catalogers supplied the name, since the print carries no caption of its own. The building's ornate Italian Renaissance style, with its marble and decorative detail, was meant to show the young nation's commitment to learning, and the picture captures it at the moment it was new.
