Taken around 1898, this view of the Library of Congress was made only a year or so after the main building opened in 1897. The library had outgrown its rooms in the U.S. Capitol, and Congress authorized a separate building on Capitol Hill to hold its growing collections. The Thomas Jefferson Building, with its stone facade, central dome, and elaborate interior decoration, was one of the most ambitious public buildings in Washington at the time. Photographs from these early years document a new national repository of books, maps, and manuscripts still settling into its home.
