Dating to about 1898, this view most likely shows the Thomas Jefferson Building on Capitol Hill, which opened to readers in 1897 as the library outgrew its rooms in the Capitol. The library was founded in 1800, and after British troops burned the Capitol in 1814, Thomas Jefferson sold his own collection to Congress to restart it. The Beaux-Arts building, with its marble stairways and decorated halls, was meant to express the young republic's ambitions in stone.
