Taken around 1898, this view shows the Library of Congress in its newly finished home, the building now called the Thomas Jefferson Building, on the east side of the Capitol grounds in Washington. Congress had outgrown its space inside the Capitol, and the library opened its ornate Beaux-Arts building to the public in late 1897, so this photograph captures it within a year of opening. The print is part of the Prints and Photographs Division's holdings, and its lavish stone facade reflects the era's ambition to present the nation's knowledge in a monumental setting.
