Few buildings in Washington were newer in the late 1890s than the Library of Congress's main building, which opened to the public in 1897 after years of construction on Capitol Hill. The library dates to 1800, when Congress set aside money for books, and after British troops burned the Capitol in 1814, Congress bought Thomas Jefferson's personal collection to replace what was lost. This c1898 photograph records the institution just as it settled into its new home, a showpiece of ornate design meant to reflect the young nation's ambitions.
