Lead with the building itself: this view shows the Library of Congress just after its main structure, the Thomas Jefferson Building, opened to readers in 1897. The library had long shared space in the U.S. Capitol, and Congress built this separate Beaux-Arts palace on Capitol Hill to hold a growing collection. The record gives only the title and an approximate date of about 1898, so the picture is best read as a glimpse of the building in its earliest years, when its ornate facade and dome were new.
