This view shows the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., a institution that by the late 1890s had outgrown its quarters in the U.S. Capitol. Its move into the newly completed Thomas Jefferson Building, which opened in 1897, marked a major change for the nation's library. The building's ornate Beaux-Arts design, with its domes, sculpture, and decorative detail, was meant to show the country's ambitions for learning and public culture. A photograph from around 1898 captures the building soon after it opened, when it was still new to the city's skyline.
