Dated to about 1898, this print records the Library of Congress just after it moved into its own home. For nearly a century the library had been housed in the U.S. Capitol, but a new building, the Thomas Jefferson Building, opened across First Street from the Capitol in 1897. Its ornate Beaux-Arts design, with sculpture, murals, and a domed reading room, was meant to show the young nation's ambitions for learning. The photograph's date places it at the very start of the building's public life, when its stone facade was still new.
