This view shows the Library of Congress's own building on Capitol Hill, which opened to readers in 1897 after decades of crowding into the Capitol. The collection dates to 1800 and nearly disappeared when British troops burned the Capitol in 1814, until Thomas Jefferson sold his personal library to Congress to restart it. Photographed only a year or so after opening, the marble building with its dome and sculpted facades was meant to match the ambitions of a growing national collection.
