The building shown here is the Library of Congress's Thomas Jefferson Building on Capitol Hill, which opened in late 1897 and took over the collections that had been kept in the Capitol since 1800. A photograph from about 1898 captures it only months into its new role, when its ornate Beaux-Arts facade and interiors were still drawing crowds of visitors. Worth noticing is how the building was designed to display the nation's growing book collection, a sign of Washington's rising stature as a center of federal learning.
