Built on Capitol Hill, the Library of Congress's main building was still new when this print was made around 1898, having opened to readers in 1897. Its Beaux-Arts design, by architects John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz, was meant to express the young nation's ambitions for learning, and it replaced a small collection that had been housed in the Capitol and largely destroyed when British troops burned Washington in 1814. Notice the scale of the stone facade and the ornamented domes, which were a deliberate statement of civic pride. The record gives no photographer's name, so the print is best read as a document of a building in its early years.
