Shown here is the Library of Congress on Capitol Hill, photographed around 1898, a year after the institution moved into its new home. The Thomas Jefferson Building, designed in the Beaux-Arts style by architects John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz, opened in 1897 to house a collection that had outgrown its quarters in the U.S. Capitol. The brackets around the title mean the cataloger supplied the name rather than taking it from a caption. Its ornate stone façade and dome were meant to express the young nation's ambitions for learning.
