Taken around 1898, this view shows the Library of Congress in its new home, the Thomas Jefferson Building, which opened to the public in 1897 on Capitol Hill, just east of the Capitol. The library grew out of a collection Congress established in 1800, which was largely destroyed when British forces burned the Capitol in 1814. Thomas Jefferson sold his own personal library to Congress in 1815 to help rebuild it. The building's ornate Beaux-Arts design, with its decorated facades and dome, was meant to reflect the young nation's ambitions for learning.
