A drawbridge in Tokyo and a group of foreign visitors set this drawing apart from the courtesan and theater subjects most often linked to its attributed artist, Isoda Koryūsai. The catalog credits him, an ukiyo-e artist recorded as active from about 1764 to 1788, but gives a date of 1750, which falls before that span. The subject tags point instead to 1850 to 1900, when Japan opened its ports and Westerners began traveling through Tokyo, so the date is best treated as uncertain. The scene offers a glimpse of a city in transition, with its canal crossings serving both residents and newcomers.
