Drawbridges and foreign visitors in Tokyo are the subjects this drawing is catalogued under, a pairing that sets it apart from the figure prints around it. The record attributes it to Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period ukiyo-e artist who worked from about 1764 to 1788, but it also gives the date as 1750, and the subject range of 1850 to 1900 falls later still. Those dates do not agree, so the picture's exact period is uncertain. The span from the late Edo period into the Meiji era saw Tokyo open to foreigners, which makes the subject tags worth weighing against the artist's working years.
