Drawbridges in Tokyo and the foreign visitors who appear with them are the subjects this sheet is catalogued under, which sets it apart from the many Edo-period city views. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, who worked in Edo from about 1764 to 1788, yet dates the drawing to 1750 and places its subjects between 1850 and 1900, a span that falls after his active years. That mismatch is worth noting, since the opening of Japan to foreign trade in the 1850s brought Western visitors into Tokyo and changed what artists chose to depict.
