A drawbridge in Tokyo and a group of foreign visitors are the subjects here, and the catalog places them between 1850 and 1900. The record's date of 1750 doesn't fit that span, nor does the artist's listed working period of 1764 to 1788, so the dating and attribution deserve some caution. Isoda Koryūsai was an Edo-period painter and printmaker known for scenes of women and city life. The subject points to the years after Japan opened its ports to foreign trade in the 1850s, when Western visitors became a more common sight in Tokyo.
