A drawbridge crossing a moat, with foreign visitors in view, sets this drawing apart from the Japanese prints on the board. The catalog subjects place the scene in Tokyo between 1850 and 1900, a period when the city was still Edo until its renaming in 1868 and when Western travelers were increasingly visiting Japan after the country opened its ports. The record attributes the work to Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period ukiyo-e artist active from 1764 to 1788, yet dates it to 1750, so the date is probably uncertain. Readers should weigh that conflict when interpreting the drawing.
