This drawing is catalogued under the generic title "Japanese drawing," but its subject headings point to drawbridges in Tokyo and to foreign visitors there between 1850 and 1900. That is a period when Japan reopened to Western trade and travel after more than two centuries of tight restriction, and Edo was renamed Tokyo in 1868. The record also lists the date as 1750, which does not match the artist's active years, given as 1764 to 1788, so the dating deserves caution. Isoda Koryūsai was a known ukiyo-e printmaker and painter of Edo, so the drawing is worth studying as a work by his hand, whatever its exact date.
