A drawbridge and foreign visitors are the subjects that set this drawing apart, and the catalog headings place the scene in Tokyo between 1850 and 1900, a period when Japan was opening its ports to Western travelers after more than two centuries of tight restriction. The attribution to Isoda Koryūsai, who worked in Edo between about 1764 and 1788 and is known for woodblock prints of courtesans, actors and city life, does not fit those later dates, so the 1750 date in the record should be read with caution.
