A drawing of Tokyo's drawbridges, with foreign visitors among its subjects, sets this sheet apart from the artist's better-known work. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-based painter and printmaker active from 1764 to 1788, yet dates the sheet to 1750 and places its subjects between 1850 and 1900, so the timeline should be read with caution. Koryūsai is best known for prints of beauties and everyday scenes, and the bridges and travelers here reflect city life in a later period, when Japan's ports opened to foreign trade and Western visitors became a more common sight in Tokyo.
