This drawing is catalogued as a view of a drawbridge in Tokyo with foreign visitors, a pairing that sets it apart from the many Japanese prints in the collection that show courtesans or actors. The record's dates conflict. It lists 1750, but it also credits Isoda Koryūsai, who worked between 1764 and 1788, and the subject headings point to 1850 to 1900, a period of foreign contact that followed Japan's reopening to trade. Bridges were central to Edo, and later Tokyo, as crossings over the city's canals and rivers, so a scene like this would have shown both everyday traffic and the unfamiliar presence of Western travelers.
