This drawing is catalogued as a view of a drawbridge in Tokyo with foreign visitors, a subject the record places between 1850 and 1900, the final decades of the Edo period and the early Meiji era. That was a time when Japan was reopening to Western trade and diplomacy, and foreign travelers and officials were a new sight in the capital. The record gives 1750 as the date and lists the artist as Isoda Koryūsai, active 1764 to 1788, so the dates do not agree with one another, and readers should treat the attribution and timing as provisional.
