A drawbridge in Tokyo, with foreign visitors listed among its subjects, sets this drawing apart from the other scenes in this group. The catalog credits it to Isoda Koryūsai, an ukiyo-e artist who worked in Edo, the city renamed Tokyo in 1868, and who was active from the mid-1760s to the late 1780s. The record's dates do not agree with one another: 1750 predates his known career, while the subject terms point to 1850 to 1900, a period of rapid change after Japan opened its ports to Western trade. The mismatch is worth keeping in mind when reading the drawing as a record of the city and its visitors.
