This drawing is catalogued with a subject heading for a drawbridge in Tokyo and another for foreign visitors, a pairing that points to the years after Japan reopened its ports in the 1850s, when Westerners began arriving in the capital. The record's date of 1750 does not fit the artist credited here, Isoda Koryūsai, who is known to have worked from about 1764 to 1788, so the sheet's exact age is uncertain. Koryūsai was an Edo-period master of the ukiyo-e tradition, known for elegant figure studies, and the drawing's sketch-like character is worth noticing as a window onto how artists recorded city life.
