The subject tags name a drawbridge in Tokyo and foreign visitors to the city, which places the scene in the late Edo and early Meiji years, after Japan began opening its ports to foreign trade in the 1850s. The record is inconsistent, however. It gives 1750 as the date, credits Isoda Koryūsai, who is recorded as active from 1764 to 1788, and tags the subject as 1850 to 1900. Those gaps mean the dating should be treated as uncertain. Koryūsai is best known for woodblock prints of women and everyday life, so readers may want to check the attribution before relying on it.
