A drawbridge in Tokyo is the subject here, and the record also tags the scene with foreign visitors. That pairing points to the decades after Japan opened its ports to Western traders in the 1850s, when the city was still called Edo until its renaming in 1868. Drawbridges like this one spanned the moats and canals around the shogun's castle and its surrounding districts, making them natural landmarks for travelers and artists alike. The sheet is credited to Isoda Koryūsai, an ukiyo-e artist known from the 1760s through the 1780s, but the record's date of 1750 falls before that working period, so the dating is best treated as uncertain.
