The fort in this picture is Fort McAllister, the earthwork on the Ogeechee River south of Savannah, where Army engineers are removing an 8-inch Columbiad from its position. Its capture in December 1864 opened the river to Union supply ships and gave Sherman's army at the end of its march to the sea a route to the coast. The glass negative was made by David B. Woodbury, a photographer working in the Savannah area after the city fell, and it records the dismantling of Confederate defenses in the months that followed.
