Fort McAllister, an earthwork on the Ogeechee River south of Savannah, is the subject of this view, which survives as two glass negatives that form a stereograph pair when seen through a viewer. The fort guarded the river approach to Savannah and turned back a Union naval attack in 1863 before Union troops captured it in December 1864 at the close of Sherman's march to the sea. The record credits David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, as the photographer, and the wet collodion process he used required plates to be coated, exposed, and developed quickly on site.
