Two glass plates, one for each eye, make up this 1865 stereograph of Savannah, which was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. The city had surrendered to Union forces under William T. Sherman in December 1864 at the end of his march to the sea, so the pictures show a place recently occupied rather than a battlefield. The photographer is attributed to David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, and the wet collodion process he used required plates to be coated, exposed, and developed quickly, often on the spot.
