This is a stereograph, a pair of nearly identical photographs taken from slightly different positions so that they produce a three-dimensional effect when viewed through a stereoscope. Its two glass plates show rows of soldiers' graves in Savannah, Georgia, in 1865, the year the Civil War ended. Union forces had taken the city in December 1864 at the close of Sherman's march to the sea, and the cemeteries that followed were among the first things photographers recorded in the occupied South. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, made these wet collodion negatives, a process that required the plates to be coated and exposed before they dried.
