The record names St. John's Church in Savannah, Georgia, captured as a stereograph, a pair of images meant to be viewed through a stereoscope to give a sense of depth. Its two glass plates were made with the wet collodion process, which required the plate to be coated, exposed, and developed while still wet. Savannah had surrendered to Union forces under William T. Sherman in late December 1864, and in 1865 photographers such as David B. Woodbury, to whom this view is attributed, recorded the city's churches, streets, and buildings during the postwar months. Views like this one give a close look at the city's architecture in the period just after the war.
