The church's tall steeple and white facade set it apart on Savannah's streets, and this view records it as it looked in the early twentieth century. The Independent Presbyterian Church dates to the city's early nineteenth century, when Savannah was rebuilding its civic and religious buildings in the Greek Revival style that still defines much of its center. The photograph is a 5 by 7 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that traveled widely between about 1900 and 1915 documenting American towns, landmarks and street life. Its glass plate format preserves fine architectural detail, including the church's columns and the spire, which make it useful for studying the building and the streetscape around it.
