The big gun at Fort McAllister, an earthwork guarding the Ogeechee River south of Savannah, is the subject here. Union forces under William T. Sherman captured the fort in December 1864, which opened a supply route from the river to the fleet offshore. This picture was made as a stereograph, two glass plates that give a three-dimensional view through a stereoscope, a popular parlor format of the 1860s. The photographer is attributed to David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866.
