Army engineers are shown hauling an 8-inch Columbiad, a large smoothbore muzzle-loading cannon, from Fort McAllister, a Confederate earthwork on the Ogeechee River south of Savannah. The fort guarded the river approach to the city until Union forces under General William T. Sherman overran it in December 1864, at the close of his march to the sea, and the victors then stripped its heavy guns. Because the picture was made as a stereograph, its two near-identical halves were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave viewers at home a convincing sense of depth and the weight of the equipment being moved.
