Shot on an 8 x 10 inch glass negative, this view looks along the brick arched passageways inside Fort Pulaski, the coastal fortification on Cockspur Island near Savannah, Georgia. The fort was built by the U.S. Army between 1829 and 1847 and was famous for its masonry walls, which were breached by rifled cannon fire in 1862, an event that changed the future of brick fortifications. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its color and black-and-white views of the country around 1900, issued this scene as a postcard-style record, and the sharp perspective of the vaulted corridors shows the fort's rugged construction.
