Monterey Square, the setting for this view, takes its name from the 1846 Battle of Monterrey in the Mexican-American War, and the Pulaski Monument stands in its center to honor Kazimierz Pulaski, the Polish-born cavalry officer who was mortally wounded at the 1779 siege of Savannah. The Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns and landmarks for commercial sale, made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1915. It shows how the monument and its plaza looked to visitors in the early twentieth century, when Savannah's squares drew attention as a major sight.
