Bull Street cuts straight through Savannah's historic core, and this view centers on the monument to Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene in Johnson Square, one of the city's original squares laid out under James Oglethorpe's 1733 plan. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed towns and scenery across the country around 1900 and sold the views as postcards and prints, made this glass negative about 1906. Savannah's shaded squares and wide streets made the city a natural subject for a company that catered to travelers, and the picture shows how the downtown looked to visitors of that era.
