Bull Street runs through Savannah's grid of squares, and this view includes the monument to Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene in Johnson Square. Greene, a commander under George Washington, was honored with a memorial in the city he helped defend. The photograph is a glass dry-plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that between about 1900 and 1915 produced views of American cities and landmarks for postcards and travel publications. Its commercial purpose shows in the composition, which frames the square and its surroundings as a place to visit. The negative's catalog notes record its later gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado and its transfer to the Library of Congress.
