Broughton Street, the main commercial thoroughfare of downtown Savannah, Georgia, is the subject here, shot looking east down its length. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely around the turn of the twentieth century to document American towns, streets and businesses. This 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative dates from between 1900 and 1910, a period when Savannah's storefronts and street traffic drew steady attention from the company's cameras. The negative reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
