The National Bank of Savannah stands as one of the more formal commercial buildings captured in this set of Savannah views, recorded on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative around 1907. The photograph belongs to the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that produced large numbers of views of American towns, streets and businesses in the early twentieth century, often for sale as postcards and lithographs. Savannah, founded in 1733 and known for its squares and bank-lined commercial district, was a major port and cotton-trade center at the time, which made its banking houses important symbols of local prosperity. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
