The outer wall of Fort Pulaski, the brick fortress guarding the mouth of the Savannah River on Cockspur Island, carries a notable military history. Army engineers began building it in 1829, and it was named for Casimir Pulaski, the Polish-born officer who died in the Revolutionary War. In 1862, Union rifled cannon breached its thick masonry walls, a result that showed how quickly such forts had become obsolete. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company between 1890 and 1910.
