Fort Pulaski, on Cockspur Island at the mouth of the Savannah River, still shows the damage from its 1862 siege in the brick walls pictured here. Union forces under Quincy Gillmore bombarded the fort with rifled cannon, breaching its masonry in about 30 hours, and the Confederate garrison surrendered in April 1862. The episode showed that rifled artillery could defeat thick brick walls, which changed fortification design. This Detroit Publishing Company view, made between 1900 and 1910, captures the fort decades later, when its scarred walls had become a historic site.
