Few places near Savannah carry the history of the Hermitage, a rice plantation on the Savannah River. This glass-plate negative, made between 1900 and 1910, shows its slave quarters, a reminder of the enslaved labor that worked the fields until emancipation in 1865. The negative is one of many made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that documented American towns, landscapes and rural life in the early twentieth century. Its 8 by 10 inch format captures more detail than a smaller plate would, which helps show the construction of the cabins and their setting.
